I would also contend, based on no evidence whatsoever other than my over-fertile imagination, that all epic symphonic Scandinavian-type death-metal kinds of music share a common ancestor in a single short (and yet epic) song from 1970. Led Zeppelin III, Side 1, Track 1:

All together now:

We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
Hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new land,
To fight the horde, sing and cry: Valhalla, I am coming!

Am I just curmudgeoning, or is there nothing as potent as this coming out today?          1970 rambunctious and forgotten

Gnu:

And you did it again, Eddy, Faith No More. Loved them.

You're not stalking me, are you?

Remember this one, off Angel Dust?

Faith No More: Everythings Ruined

Apologies for the late reply. Yeah Faith No More has always been one of my favorites.  I remember that song, I've never had Angel Dust  ;), but remember seeing that clip on a late night music show.

Did you ever get into Mike Patton's other band Mr Bungle?

Love is a Fist by Mr Bungle

Pretty busy stuff at times, but I still think they're a classic.

And I am stalking you, but only on this thread, and only while I write this post.   ;)

I liked both those things. But I don't know much techno, beyond Underworld and the Chemical Brothers...

Did anyone notice that Captain Beefheart died in December?

Not everybody's cup of tea, of course. Truly strange music and lyrics, discordant and off-beat. Swamp-blues. Or something. But I loved it.

1967, Electricity, from his first album Safe As Milk:
Captain Beefheart - Electricity
1972, from The Spotlight Kid:
Captain Beefheart - I'm Gonna Boogiarize You Baby
Same year, two songs from Clear Spot. Big-Eyed Beans is orsum. And the lyrics of Golden Birdies bear reproduction:

Those little golden birdies look at them

And the mystic Egypt tossle dangling down
Old sleeper-man shish, don't wake him
Up one hand broom star was an obi-man
revered throughout the bone-knob land
His magic black purse slit creeped open,
Let go flocks of them

Shish sookie singabus
Snored like a red merry-go-round horse
And an acid gold bar swirled up and down,
Up and down, in back of the singabus
And the panataloon duck white goose neck quacked
webcore, webcore

What?

I said it was strange.

Captain Beefheart Big Eyed Beans from Venus & Golden Birdies

RIP, Captain.

Webcore, webcore.

From Parachute, 1970:

As silver tears they weave and lace
Sad patterns upon her face,
She waits for you.
So low below a laser sun,
Through velvet fields she runs,
Reaching for you.
And so you bleed now,
Your hand holds the knife
That is tearing your life apart.
Why don't you leave now?
The city's too heavy
And your dreams they melt in the sun.

.....and now for your driving pleasure

The very start of this song always excites me > foot-stomping genius <  and sure it ends up as Black Betty a righteous boogie if ever there was one, but the first 25 seconds  start seems so possible of going anywhere at all that I'm almost disappointed that it can only repeat Black Betty no matter how many times I play it.

RamJam ? Black Betty HD ? 16:9 widescreen

.....and I did say driving pleasure   OK an old one from a band who were big with this one, that were absolute gods in middel Europe.
I love the change of pace at 2:30    almost James Bondish themes  then the sparse duelling guitars from  3:36  forgotten classic
Golden Earring - Radar Love

and guitar   sublime simple unique stylings at 1:11, the 2:32 and glory to play you out at 4:45 on.
