Natural explanations
« on: August 16, 2010, 12:38:42 PM »
I'd like to compile a list of things that humans once gave supernatural/magical/spiritual origins to, which have since been explained (thanks to science) in fully natural terms.  I'll start it off with a few examples:

- Earthquakes/Thunder = The gods are angry.  Now understood by plate techtonics and weather.

- Deranged person = Demon possession.  Now understood as mental illness.

- Drought = Lack of (blood) sacrifice.  Now understood as a normal part of our planets climate patterns.

- Disease/Sickness = Sin.  Now understood by germ theory and medical science.

Please add to list.  Thanks.

Stripped/ spotted goats = goat parents screwing within sight of stripped sticks (gen30:37-39). Now understood to be genetics.

I might suggest adding the biblical verses backing up these biblical claims. Not all xians know the bible as well as we do and might not believe us...

edit: eating --> screwing
What's true is already so. Owning up to it does not make it worse.

ah, you poor misguided child.  Demon possession is real.  Benny Hinn gets rid of them all the time along with other "true" Christian preachers.  If you are not careful you will be next.  Posting on this site opens you up to demon possession. :o
Yo, put that in your pipe and smoke it.  Quit ragging on my Lord.

Eclipses, storms in general, volcanoes, floods, "faith healing" (placebo effect and/or slight of hand), fertility, genetic defects/mutations, variety of language, heliocentrism, gravity.  I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch, but am kind of short on time.

Geo-central universe, the age of the universe, Noah's flood.
Actually it doesn't. One could conceivably be all-powerful but not exceptionally intelligent.

Losing your keys --> Praying ------> Finding your keys.

Losing your keys --> Not praying --> Finding your keys.

You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe.

Wasn't that also believed to be Demonic Possession? I'll add a few others.

-Diversity of life= Intelligent Design (now we understand evolution and mutations/natural selection is the master mind).
-Creation of the universe= God's will (ok, we still don't completely understand how it was created, but saying 'God did it' is just an easy, bullshit answer. God of the gaps basically).
-Very emotions (like love, hate, and happiness)= gods (now we know they are just chemical reactions in the brain).
-Heart was once thought as center of intelligence= we now know it is brain responsible for that.
Religion is to superstition as chocolate is to coco beans.
You can call me an atheist or agnostic with pantheistic beliefs but I ain't believing in your imaginary omnipotent friend bullshit.

Rolling dice or drawing straws (casting lots) = mind of God, now mostly people would agree that the laws of probability will determine the outcome.
Movement of celestial bodies = god(s) moving them. Now understood to be caused by a combination of the earth's rotation and orbit, and the orbits of the moon and planets.

Not at all:

Ge:15:4: And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

See it's not your air trying to get out, it's your heir trying to get out.
Nobody says “There are many things that we thought were natural processes, but now know that a god did them.”

Consciousness = Soul (or some epiphenomenon external to the body) ... now undersood to be a physical brain state.

Flat Earth ... now understood to be an oblate spheroid.

Trance-like states are often interpreted as religious ecstasy or visions and can be deliberately induced using a variety of techniques, including prayer, religious rituals, meditation, pranayama (breathwork or breathing exercises), physical exercise, coitus (and/or sex), music, dancing, sweating (e.g. sweat lodge), fasting, thirsting, and the consumption of psychotropic drugs such as cannabis.
