One day the United States will be like Scandinavia

It might seem impossible today, but one day the United States will be like Scandinavia when it comes to religion. How will that be?

Scandanavian Nonbelievers, Which Is Not to Say Atheists

Anyone who has paid attention knows that Denmark and Sweden are among the least religious nations in the world. Polls asking about belief in God, the importance of religion in people’s lives, belief in life after death or church attendance consistently bear this out.

It is also well known that in various rankings of nations by life expectancy, child welfare, literacy, schooling, economic equality, standard of living and competitiveness, Denmark and Sweden stand in the first tier.

What will this society be like?

“a society — a markedly irreligious society — that was, above all, moral, stable, humane and deeply good.”

Also:

This indifference or obliviousness to religious matters was sometimes subtly enforced. “In Denmark,” a pastor told Mr. Zuckerman, “the word ‘God’ is one of the most embarrassing words you can say. You would rather go naked through the city than talk about God.”…

Social conformity or not, Mr. Zuckerman was deeply impressed with the matter-of-fact way in which many of his interviewees spoke of death, without fear or anxiety, and their notable lack of existential searching for any ultimate meaning of life.

Yes, it is hard to believe that this will happen. But it will happen, and in fact is in the process of happening now. Why?

One reason: God is imaginary. That is the truth, and the truth eventually wins. It is becoming obvious to more and more people.

Another reason: Countries without religion win. As mentioned above: “It is also well known that in various rankings of nations by life expectancy, child welfare, literacy, schooling, economic equality, standard of living and competitiveness, Denmark and Sweden stand in the first tier.”

The United States can no longer afford religion. It is dragging our society down. Economic forces will become too strong, and the economic elite will begin to dismantle religion. It is the only way that the United States can prosper.

Sorry, but go back and read Marx again. The economic elite (i.e., the capitalist class) is now and has always been in collusion with the church and religious leaders to keep down the proletariat (you and me and everyone else we know). Economic forces have not, can not and will not dismantle religion.

Capitalism requires that religion be used as a tool – consider the millions of average, middle class and poor people who slavishly vote for the GOP in every election!! Who’s telling them to go out and vote against gays and abortion? Why in fact would the GOP want to be the anti-gay, anti-abortion party if “market forces” were going to make religion a thing of the past?

What will gradually reduce religion from the center of the public square into the domain of the individual’s conscience is improved education, improved living conditions, improved job benefits, etc. All of these have been accomplished in many European countries by SOCIALISM, not by capitalism.

So long as religion remains a useful tool of the ruling class, it will always be with us. Until people have matured enough to keep their religion in their own hearts and conscience, to live their faith in the real world without having to force it on others, to believe because they really do believe and not just because someone told them to – we will be left with the sort of religion we know today.

America can indeed prosper, even with religion, but not by following the failed steps of capitalism. We need to follow the example of our cousins in Europe and begin to put people before profits, put quality of life ahead of GDP, and put real human priorities over the accumulation of wealth.

Jonathon: Shades of Zeitgeist. I cordially disagree on your emphasis and prescriptions, if not in a polemic. There is plenty of grey, with the deepest shades coming from the advocates of ignorance and superstition.

the creators of this site are idiots, everything stated is taken out of context, if they had any idea about the bible they would know that the translation of it into english has changed they way some perceive it, also where in the bible does it talk of religion having anything to do with god? religion is man made and has nothing to do with god, religion is a form of politcal control thats all, so for you inbred hicks who created this site try to tell the whole story not just little extracts here and there that are easily misunderstood and some of which were writen so long ago it nolonger relates to today and is also stated in the bible in later stages that things have changed and the ways of the past will nolonger be done in that way, i would like to say burn in hell but if you read the bible you will know that hell does not exist, also i saw on this site that you think there is not scientific proof of god existence, so what do you say to the scientists that have the proof? are you a scientist? of course not your just a brain dead wanker, so before you start preaching shit get all the facts straight

Darrel, people who represent God do not curse and swear, that only places you in the same category as the “idiots” on this website. Rather speak to them with love. Pray for them if you must. Or maybe you are not a believer because believers do not use that kind of language to Minister to unbelievers no matter how nasty and rude they are (at all).

Wait a minute…Darrell, I re-read your comment carefully again. You are not representing God, you are simply being neutral, no wonder the bad language. Forgive me, I thought you were a brother in Christ, truly sorry.I don’t blame you for using bad language because you are not a believer…sorry, my bad.

Darrell, got facts supporting the errors you mention?

If you do, we have something to discuss, and if I agree I’ll bring them up with the moderators who can contact the owner(s) of this site.

If you do not, then you have no facts yourself and as such your opinions can be ignored.

“so what do you say to the scientists that have the proof?”

Darrell, this is a joke, right? Proof of god? Where? Why isn’t this proof available to everybody?

Oh, wait. You probably have a different definition of “proof” than everybody else does.

Hey, I have a simple question for you:
What if your atheistic theories are just a product o human imagination and nothing more?
Forget about proofs: nobody could proove that God exists or not. Atheism that claim it can proof the non-existance of God is simply childish.
And, one more: why don’t you fight against Santa Close? What difference it will make?
( By the way, atheism killed more people than any religion will ever do( just think of Stalin ), so … forget about that crap with the damage produced by religion. It’s just non-sense. )

DYO, to reply thoughtfully would take time and effort — much of it in untangling what you don’t know before we can even get to addressing what is valid in your main comments.

Is it worth my time to spend that effort?

    If you think it is, let me know by posting in the forums;

Stalin rejected neo-Darwinian evolution in favor of Lamarckism.

Mendeleyev’s “periodic system of elements” clearly shows how very important in the history of nature is the emergence of qualitative changes out of quantitative changes. The same thing is shown in biology by the theory of neo-Lamarckism, to which neo-Darwinism is yielding place. (Stalin 1906, 304)

More specifically, Stalin rejected the ideas of August Weismann, a 19th-century German biologist, in favor of Trofim Lysenko, a pseudoscientist who based his ideas on Lamarckism. Weismann, who accepted Darwin’s theory of evolution, disproved Lamarckism and proposed that germ cells pass on hereditary information; his work was an early variant of the modern evolutionary synthesis which unites evolutionary theory with genetics. Stalin appointed Lysenko head of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the Soviet Union, where he had great political power. (Rossiannov 1993)

Stalin and Lysenko rejected evolution and genetics for ideological, not biological, reasons. (Stalin was quite ignorant of science in general.) The class struggle of Marxism contradicts the individual competition implied by natural selection. More importantly, genetics, implying that traits were fixed at birth, contradicted the ideal of moulding and improving traits. Stalin proclaimed genetics a capitalist pseudo-science.

Stalin was, first and foremost, a Marxist dictator, far above any allegiance he might have had to any theories concerning the origin of species, whether Lamarckian or Darwinian. Stalin distrusted scientists as being prone to free-thinking. Though his persecution of biologists and biology were particularly egregious (causing appalling damage to Soviet agriculture), he imprisoned and killed thousands of scientists and engineers from all fields.

Oppression and murder have been used as tools of statecraft long before Darwin published his work.

There is no evidence that Darwin’s work was used as a justification for oppression and murder. Stalin doubtless accepted Newton’s theory of gravity, but creationists do not claim that Newton’s theory should be suppressed because Stalin believed it.

    That’s rubbish.

    The Crusades

    The Inquisition

    Witch hunts

    Suicide bombers

    9/11

    The “trouble” in Ireland

    It goes on and on.

Didn’t your god drown all of humanity with a great flood?

Aren’t there immense crimes against humanity in your bible?

Rape. Incest. Murder. Slavery. The killing of children. The stoning to death of gays, infidels, adulterers, blasphemers, palm readers.

    Doesn’t it sound ridiculous?
