A secular inauguration?

HEARING GRANTED on Suit to Stop Religion at Inauguration

This is the case in which eleven nontheistic organizations and twenty-nine nontheistic individuals, led by Michael Newdow, sued to stop plans to include prayer and a religious oath in the forthcoming inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States.

“If we prevail at the January 15 hearing, this inauguration will be secular, as it should be under the Constitution,” said Bob Ritter

    Wow… wouldn’t that be AWESOME!

Just imagine… no controversy over bigoted preachers giving an prayer during the invocation… no meaningless “so help me God” pledges… just good, old-fashioned American, constitutional and non-biased celebration of our democratic republic.

I even think that if we stopped including religious ceremony in such events that in short order people won’t even notice or miss it.

I’d love to go to a sports event and not be subjected to a sectarian prayer. I’d love to attend a high school graduation and not be subjected to a sectarian prayer. I’d really love to watch our new president be sworn into office without invoking the supernatural.

Besides…. what purpose do such prayers serve? Shouldn’t those who insist on such prayer have to justify their reasoning?

    Jonathon: Exactly.

One nit: If the events are private and do not use public funds, I can’t say anything against the practice of praying except that it is at best tacky.

They could also start talking about Xenu and the wonders of being Clear (Scientology), and if they did it on their own dime they can do it. Should they? Of course not; it’s rude and imposes on others.
