Brainwashing is an important part of religious insanity

A sobering look at religious brainwashing:

5 Ways to Inspire Your Teenagers to Share the Gospel

As the leader of a ministry called Dare 2 Share, an organization that annually equips tens of thousands of teens to evangelize, I am in the motivation business. I have to be. If a clinical approach to evangelism were enough to motivate teenagers we could just do a video-based training series for youth groups and leave it at that. But it takes way more to motivate teens to actually go beyond talking about evangelism to actually doing it.

How might you do that? One approach is to fill a teen’s brain with superstitious nonsense, like this:

4. Talk about hell.

There I said it. Teenagers need to be reminded of what’s at stake for those who die without Christ. In a very real way, those who don’t know Jesus are unknowingly headed 100 mph at a cliff that leads to everlasting destruction. Our job as caring Christians is to jerk the steering wheel…and to get our teens to do the same with their friends.

Paul put it this way in 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, “He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.”

“Punished with everlasting destruction.” Isn’t that great? So the teen evangelist’s message is, “come worship a being who tortures people for eternity!” Why would ANYONE listen to a message like that? Why worship a torturer? Such is the insanity of religion.

Anyway, for some reason, some people here (Messenger, im talking to you! :D)
believe that “Everlasting torture” or “eternal pain” means that it will only last for a certain period of time….

Thomas, they use the word “eternal” to stress the extremely long amount of time that people spend in hell.

It is similar to how the word “permanent” is used in the term “permanent markers”. Those markers do not last forever, they just use the word “permanent” to stress how long it lasts.

Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

The point about brainwashing really strikes home.

I know some folks who are active in their local church and one of the things they regularly say is “get them while they are still young and impressionable”. They have a years of indoctrination laid out with different classes and different awards all along the way. When asked about it they are surprisingly forthcoming and state that if they don’t get them to accept the church by the time they are sixteen then they won’t be willing to unquestionably accept religion. And again, they recognize that they need unquestioned loyalty, not skepticism.

It’s these years of brainwashing and indoctrination that create the mental trap of religion. If religion was actually true, then they wouldn’t need such subversive techniques.

The character who once posted here under the moniker Horatio/Horatiio used the “think of your eternal punishment” threat upon his departure. What a fucking idiot. Who buys into this lunacy? The Hell threat is what permanently turned me off religion when I was but 14 or so years old.

6.Anonymous, your claim of brain washing is crap.

Many people are converted after they turn 16, therefore this “years of introduction” crap is false.

Teaching religion at a young age does not create a mental block. The reason that there bond to religion is sometimes stronger when it is taught to them at a young age is because it allows them to learn about the morals of GOD, and they laws of GOD(such as I am the LORD thy God, Thou shalt have no other gods, No graven images or likenesses, Not take the LORD’s name in vain, Remember the sabbath day, Honor thy father and thy mother, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet) so they can decide either to follow GOD, or not.

GOD’s teachings are not forced on them, they are given a choice to either follow Jesus’s teachings, or not. The choice is their’s.

Religious education is not brain washing.

Thomas is brain washing you by fabricating lies and tring to convince you that they are true.

Well, first, that’s not entirely true. They believe it because it’s in the bible and they have been taught to believe the bible.

But what do they believe? They believe in talking snakes, men who live in fishes, men made from dust, women from ribs and so on. It’s am absolute load of utter nonsense and crap – it’s stuff they reject from any other book – and the only reason people believe it is because they have been conditioned to unconditionally do so.

They’ve been brainwashed and the above is confirming it. He’s just offering an excuse but admitting the reality.

The challenge is there yet no Christian has ever succeeded, and the ones here are too cowardly to even try.

So, again, if you want to prove that Christians are not brainwashed, it’s easy. Prove to us that the bible is the word of a god and then prove to us that it is Yahweh. If you cannot do that, then you are demonstrating your brainwashing.

Alex, read this and you will finally understand that GOD is the only person who has the authority to stone a person, unless GOD grants them that authority by making them perfect.

8 Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 But early in the morning he went back to the Temple, and all the people came to him, and he sat and taught them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery. They forced her to stand before the people. 4 They said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught having sexual relations with a man who is not her husband. 5 The law of Moses commands that we stone to death every woman who does this. What do you say we should do?” 6 They were asking this to trick Jesus so that they could have some charge against him.But Jesus bent over and started writing on the ground with his finger. 7 When they continued to ask Jesus their question, he raised up and said, “Anyone here who has never sinned can throw the first stone at her.” 8 Then Jesus bent over again and wrote on the ground.9 Those who heard Jesus began to leave one by one, first the older men and then the others. Jesus was left there alone with the woman standing before him. 10 Jesus raised up again and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one judged you guilty?”11 She answered, “No one, sir.”Then Jesus said, “I also don’t judge you guilty. You may go now, but don’t sin anymore.”]

It’s true that a fully immersed fundamentalist cannot believe in evolution but a standard believer can. Why? Well, as you’ve seen and heard, the bible is open to interpretation. Literal, figurative, parable, allegory, the reader gets to determine the “perfect words” meaning. Adherents fit onto a sliding scale of insanity. Phelps Baptists/messenger/”a”/Xenon/ at the extreme end of the scale. These would be the fringe elements, the whackos, if you will.

For years, religion has redefined itself to pretend to be in accordance with reality. As we find out more about the world the religious, desperate to hang on to their delusion, claim to have found “new meanings”.

What good is a supposedly-holy book if it only makes sense after you already know what you claim it is going to teach you?

Again, that people that they get something out of their religion that they can’t get anywhere else, shows how they’ve drunk the cool-aid and now belong to a cult.

    Brainwashed? Of course they are.

“Historydeniers!”; “40percenters!”; those are the Ad Hominem Abusives of the new Dawkins battlefront: history as Richard Dawkins decrees it is not to be denied. To deny evolution is unconscionable: evolution is fact and is the backbone of biology which is the foundation of science and all truth in the universe. Maybe all the universes. Maybe it’s even more true than that. It certainly is in Dawkins’ universe.

Comparing the “fact” of evolution to the fact of the size of the moon being smaller than the earth, Dawkins clearly goes out of his way to obscure the difference between measurable facts vs. non-measured inferences, experimental data vs. conjecture. Or perhaps he truly doesn’t know the difference, being a life-long evolutionary proponent who has never been forced to be subject to actual experimental proofs of his proclaimed scientific “facts”. He does admit that all the evidence for evolution is inferential, and he makes the standard claim that mountains of such conjecture make it fact.

But that is not true. It fails the basic tests of logic. Let’s run some tests:

First, Dawkins seems to think that declaring a tautology based on conjecture creates a truth, or at least a fact. First Principle #1 (identity or tautology) states that “If it is true, then it is true” . This is not the same as “If I declare it true, then it is true” . False tautology: Logic failure #1.

Next let’s try First Principle #2, which states that “a proposition cannot be both true and false”. Now, without experimental verification can we know if a principle is true or false, fact or fallacy? The Atheist / Materialist / Empiricist viewpoint is that evidence of a material nature is required in order to believe a thing. The evidence offered for evolution is inference: conjecture. This is not physical, material evidence, it is non-physical, non-material; moreover it smacks of being religious, a belief without empirical, experimental, substantive, material evidence. Dinosaurs? DNA? Do inferred relationships prove descent? Or are they conjecture? Clearly the latter.

The inference / speculation issue is one that Dawkins cannot dodge and cannot win, straight on. It violates the concept that science is the search for “what is” by inserting extrapolative speculation as a substitute for experimental data. It contradicts the concept of science itself. It fails the Non-Contradiction Principle hands down. Logic failure #2.

The third First Principle states that a “thing cannot be partly true and partly false”. Dawkins violates this by stating that evolution is true, when evolution is hardly even defined properly at this late date. We don’t need to understand mechanisms to know that it happened – is his response (elsewhere). Thus evolution is commonly compared to gravity, which we know exists without knowing the mechanism. But this is a false comparison; we can experimentally measure gravity but we cannot produce any experiments that even produce evolution much less measure it. So evolution falls back again onto “mountains of inference”, ie. conjecture, as its source of truth. Is evolution completely true? No one really knows other than accepting the religious stance that sufficient conjecture proves the case. So the third First Principle is an unknown and possibly unknowable source of validation or invalidation for evolution.

The only case made by Dawkins is the assertion of the sufficiency of inference and conjecture. He ignores the probabilistic issues surrounding evolution, especially the issues of first life: an existence philosophy limited to material causes requires a material cause for first life, an occurrence attributed to magical, fortuitous, undefined replicators in Dawkins’ earlier works. Also ignored is the problem of too-rapid evolution in the Cambrian period, a problem requiring special convolutions in speculatory inferences.

Dawkins’ real case is contained in his adjectives. He claims straight out that evolution is believed by “reputable” scientists, and “unbiased” readers of his book. If you disagree, you are designated a dreaded “historydenier” status, or the new pejorative, “40Percenter”. These Ad Hominem Abusives, hurled from an agenda-driven position of logical weakness, are a specialty of the Atheist Left, of which Dawkins is a prime example. If you cannot convince with logic, then first ridicule and second go for legal restrictions on non-congruent thought, such as removing children from homes of “historydeniers”, who Dawkins has previously declared are child abusers.

Dawkins does not use logic to seal his argument. He uses the religious credentials of “sufficient inference” coupled with ridicule and defamation of dissent and dissentors. He is a religious zealot selling a religious program which claims exclusive, absolute truth.

Dawkins has not yet slipped the reigns of rationality to the point of professing eugenic solutions for “historydeniers”. However, we should watch for that in the future, because his grip on logic and rational thought is virtually non-extant. Or maybe that idea is toward the back of his new book.

    Richard Writes A Book:

Logic, principles of rational thought, discernment, critical thinking, the First Principles – all these are not taught or mentioned on Dawkins’ website, at least the last time I searched his “oasis of clear thinking”. They are presumed present due to the Materialism espoused there. But a perusal of Dawkins’ writings reveals not a familiarity with logic, but a rabid defense of a cherished agenda along with associated rationalizations in support of it.

The excerpt from Dawkins’ book, “The Greatest Show On Earth” seems to indicate yet another step in the same direction. After inflating his own intellectual image with references to ancient Greeks, Romans and the Latin language, Dawkins gets to the meat of his pique: there are deniers out there: that’s just wrong! And the flow continues in that direction. Dawkins doesn’t pretend to use logic; he uses pejoratives, and that reveals the incredible rational weakness of his position. Despite this flaw he undoubtedly will sell a boatload of books, and the ridicule contained within will no doubt be satisfactory to convince a few others of his keen grip on ontology.

What is truly a shame about modern schools is not whether they do or do not teach that evolution is truth. What is a shame is that they do not teach the principles of rational discernment. And you can’t get that from Dawkins, either.

Anonymous, your claim of brain washing is crap.

One of these irrational theories is known as the Big Bang. Ask your self, how could all of the matter in the entire universe fit into a single speck, and how could the universe suddenly appear out of nowhere? There is a answer to this question. Physics is a completely useless field in science. Christianity provides an answer to how the universe was created. GOD made it. The universe cannot just appear by its self. Do you realize how crazy it sounds when someone says that something came from nothing all by its self? Why do religions use the fear factor of eternal pain and suffering to be a selling point to unbelievers?

What better way to have complete surrender of your adherents. ALL religions came about due to the BIG QUESTION: Where do we go after death? Homo sapiens are the only creatures concerned and aware of our impending extinctions. Horatio (remember that idiot, “a” sounds a lot like Horatio) signed off with a warning to think of your eternity. Selling fear and stupidity; it’s the realm of myth and religion.

Look, religion are a business. Their purpose is to make money and continue to be in business. Period.
Now, any good marketing person will tell you that people don’t buy products, they buy solutions to problems. No one “buys” anything unless they are convinced it will do something for them that they want or need.

So, how do religions sell people on a completely unbelievable bullshit story that someone totally made up… and even more important, give them money?
Simple, really. You need to create a problem and then sell your religion as the solution. In this case, the idea of eternal torment after you die is something any idiot stupid enough to accept despite the complete lack of evidence that any such thing exists is a “problem” that can only be solved by buying our bullshit religion. Like a good luck charm to ward off bad juju… all you need is a person stupid enough to believe it, and a person unscrupulous enough to sell it to you. And obviously, the world is full of both types of people.

    It’s even “better” than that.

Having created a “problem” of sin then having created a “solution” of salvation/Jesus the mark is then drawn deeper and deeper.

Things not working out yet? You don’t have enough faith.

Prayers not answered? Pray more, pray harder, it’s not time. Have faith.

Whatever the problem, it’s the marks fault.

They are not worthy, they don’t have enough faith, god is too complex to be understood. But, hey, cough up 10% like a good little boy and when you’re dead, there’s this wonderful place waiting for you. But if you don’t…. then that’s a problem you don’t want.

It’s really quite an achievement in some respect. The harder someone tries, the more invested they become and the harder it is to admit that they have spent their lives buying snake oil. It’s a wonderful example of brainwashing in action.

Fortunately, some people do stand back and look at it and say… WTF!

No matter the outcome, it’s in the lord’s hands and he gets a free pass. Pray for safe passage home and the bus makes it safely, then your prayer were answered. Pray and the bus ends up crashing, then it’s all part of his plan and the dead are in a BETTER place now.

Additionally, It’s easy to accept and justify behaviour when you can always pray yourself out of the guilt/responsibility. Murder, rape, incest ….it does not matter. Redemption and forgiveness is but a prayer to Jayzus away. Hey, god knew in advance any questionable action(s) and chose to allow them to happen. So almighty god, by not intervening, approves. “DPK my “flavor” was picked by the same means you picked your flavor of atheism. What are you?”

I’m a scuba diving atheist. I’m also a non-vegetarian atheist… we love animals because they are very tasty. Does 2 things count? Let’s see what other atheist cults I belong to… I drive an American made car, so I’m obviously a “made in the USA” atheist. I play an instrument, so that makes me a musical atheist. I pay my taxes, so that makes me a taxpayer atheist. I’ll bet you are maybe a part of some of these cults too, perhaps?

I came to my “flavor” of atheism when I was about 14, sitting in church, looking at all the statues, smelling the burning incense, and listening to people mindless receipt prayers and hymns. I was thinking about how the stories the priest was telling me about god simply didn’t fit with reality when it dawned on me that the reason was because it was all a bunch of made up bullshit. Exactly why YOU think of all the OTHER religions that you don’t believe in, but millions of people do.

So that’s how I came to choose my “brand” of atheism. All the rest? Gotta tell you, it’s pretty much inconsequential. Fact is, the ONLY thing any atheist must by definition have in common with any other atheist is the realization that god is imaginary. That’s it.

Now tell us how you came to choose YOUR flavor of Christianity over all the others?
Do you agree with messy that hell is NOT eternal? Do you agree with him that atheists can go to heaven as long as they are good? Do you think women should be ordained into the priesthood? Is using birth control a sin? Does Jesus cry when you masturbate? Is divorce ok with god, or forbidden? Is it ok to go to a doctor when you are sick, or should you have faith that Jesus will make you better? Is it ok to be gay?
These are all questions that Christians, reading the same bible and learning the same lessons that Jesus taught, disagree strongly about. They can’t all be right. Which one are you, and how do you know that you are right and they are wrong, without being brainwashed, that is?

I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas. I manage time efficiently.

Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row. I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing. I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook 30-minute brownies in 20 minutes.
I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.

I play bluegrass cello. I was scouted by the Mets. I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I’m bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after work, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.

My sharp sense of science and my undeniable acceptance of logic has led me to an inevitable life of theism. I refuse to let others do my thinking and I question all dogmas thrust upon me to the void.

I also know that forms of Hinduism and Buddhism are atheistic in nature and still question why some atheists refuse to accept them as their own dogma? Fact is, the ONLY thing any theist must by definition have in common with any other theist is the realization that there is a God.

It’s because your question is absurd… “why do you reject atheist religions” is like asking, “what is the angle of a corner of a circle?” There is no such thing as an atheist religion, despite your rather pathological need to think so. A “religion” is “the service or worship of god or the supernatural”. Atheism is simply the rejection of the belief in gods.
The only thing I “reject” is your contention that you have an invisible friend who is omnipotent, omniscient, and benevolent. Why do I reject that idea? Because there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that such a thing exists, and despite endless months of your meaningless diversions, you have yet to provide even one single reason for us to believe it does.
    Once again Ass… busted.

Why do you reject the sea turtle and all the other religions of the world, as well as the 39,999 + christian denominations that you think don’t have it right?
Surely you have a reason??? Did god speak to you, like he does to the messenger, and tell you who’s got it right? Is that it? Or maybe an angel told you, or perhaps you saw the answer in a frozen waterfall….. the world wants to know how you know…. you not telling us is not very Christ-like of you.

What “a” and Curmudgeon are showing here is that they have been so conditioned to think in terms of beliefs and faith that they cannot function in this world without it.

Hence their need to project their own insecurities onto other people and, in particular, those that haven’t been brainwashed into believing in the existence of their particular imaginary friends.

The more the not-so-dynamic duo try to be cute with their evasions and dodges the more they cement the proposition under discussion. It’s clear that their inability to provide even basic answers to their delusional beliefs comes as a result of years of brainwashing and reinforcement from the church.

So there is a chance for you, perhaps…

    Except there really isn’t.

“a” has yet to give a coherent explanation of why he chose his religion out of the approximately 4,200 existing today. Those are not good odds when you consider his “choice” is simply what has become inculcated, rather than rational.

He also hasn’t been able to provide an answer why he rejects thousands of other “gods” in favor of his.

And, of course, he’s running full-tit in the opposite direction when asked to justify his particular brand of Christianity over the 41,000 he has to choose from.

So, no, there is little to no chance that he has been force-fed the one true path. Ironically, were gods to exist, people like “a” would be the ones that deliberately didn’t look to find out which path was correct. There’s is the greater failing. The path to hell, if you like.

It’s sad, but until “a” and his alter-egos can shed the results of their brainwashing, they are going to waste much energy to avoid facing the actual reason they believe what they do. But, then, it would hardly be effective brainwashing were it to crumble that easy.

The basics of the argument go like this (or variations of this): evil exists; a deity could stop it but doesn’t; therefore the deity is either evil or doesn’t exist; most likely the deity doesn’t exist. There are lots of offshoots that discuss omnipotence, omniscience, free will and so forth, but the basics remain pretty much the same.

For Christmas I received a book documenting a debate between two scholars on the existence of a deity.

As I sometimes do, I read the frontispiece of a book and then go to the back to see if an index contains items that interest me. In this particular book the Atheist participant claims up front that his 8 year old son was brilliant enough to develop his own argument from evil; at the back of the book he claims that while Materialism might be a shaky position, the argument from evil is solid and irrefutable.

Simultaneously with receiving the book, the argument from the perspective of evil has arisen on other blogs, with the proponents confident that the argument is absolutely insurmountable and is concrete proof that there is no deity.

The argument from evil seems to be even more persuasive to Atheo-materialists than either the flying spaghetti monster/ orbiting teapot argument or the who-made-God argument. The argument has several aspects to be addressed:

    1. Atheists are more moral than God.
    2. Atheists are more omniscient than God.
    3. Omnibenevolence is a lacking characteristic, yet necessary of a God.
    4. Earth as a protected playground, a requirement of a God.

Some questions arise quite naturally from this. First, what are the standards for morality that are being used? Next, what evidence is produced that supports the claims? Are the claims coherent using standard logic? Do the claims in fact prove what they purport to prove?

1.Declaring that God is immoral presents an immediate cognitive dissonance. Since Atheists do not accept any morality as absolute, much less binding, they are certainly stretching credibility by declaring that God is immoral, especially by their standards. Most Atheists admit that there are no absolute moral standards common to all Atheists. So there is no standard by which to judge a deity, other than his own standard.

To claim that Atheists – if they were God – would not allow mass murder is absurd, given the history as recent as the last century which was drenched in Atheist bloodbaths. To claim that Atheists would not allow suffering, rape, torture, etc ad nauseum, is equally absurd. Atheists cannot be more moral than anyone, period. They have no common morality from which to make that claim. And their history belies their claim, in spades. Evidence for Atheist morality is contrary to the assertion made or implied by the argument from evil.

But more to the point, a deity in possession of the roots of morality cannot be faulted for whatever he chooses to do, since his morality is his decision. He cannot be immoral by his standards, since he created the standards for humans, not for himself. For the deity, morality is tautological. The claims made by the argument from evil are not logically coherent.

By the way, this is the exact position taken by Atheists, who feel they are moral. They cannot fail to be moral by their standards, since they invent the standards to suit their own convenience: they are moral by their own definition, not by any absolute standard. This argument for Atheist morality fails even amongst other Atheists whose standards differ, person to person; the morality is relative to the individual, and so is not morality at all. It is just behavior being justified with words conjured in its favor. This position is not coherent.

But back to God. If God commands one thing, then countermands that command for specific situations, is that hypocrisy as Atheists charge? The deity in charge of the roots of morality cannot be a hypocrite. It is a definitional pot hole into which the Atheist’s argument disappears.

As for material proof, are natural disasters, diseases, pain and suffering immoral in and of themselves? These are the material manifestations that are found objectionable by the argument from evil. But these material objects and actions are not evil, they just are. They have no motivations, no evil objectives. Even evil people are not evidence of an evil deity unless they are puppets of that deity; and the puppet theory is transparently false.

The lack of standards, evidence, coherence and material proof contradict the presumed validity of the argument from evil. But there is more.

    2. By claiming to know more than a deity about what is Right For Mankind, the Atheist is asserting a superior omniscience to that of the deity in question. Need I say more about such a fallacy? OK, I will say this: Philosophical Materialism is the opposite of omniscience. The act of denying a deity does not add either knowledge or wisdom to an individual. It artificially constricts knowledge to material objects and actions, while denying subjective space experiences.

    3. The primary rationalized disconnect in the argument from evil is the concept of omnibenevolence. This position maintains that because I don’t like certain aspects of living in the material world, the deity SHOULD NOT have allowed those aspects to exist. In fact the Atheist, if promoted to the position of the deity, would have eliminated all such discomforts from the world. This includes such things as natural disasters, disease, predators, entropy, aging, death and other unpleasantness. Obviously any deity that would allow such nasty obstacles to complete happiness for each human cannot be any good. Any really good deity would grant every wish and remove all unpleasantness from our experiences: no stubbed toes, no scraped knees, no burnt fingers; only pleasantness would occupy our days. So from this the Atheist concludes that no deity exists, since the world does not conform to the Atheist’s standards and specifications for a deity. No omnibenevolence, no deity.

As any parent knows, omnibenevolence is a sure path to creating a totally selfish, self-centered offspring, one that demands ever more since happiness is so elusive when sought in material things. The inability of the recipient to become happy even when awash in material goods results in resentment of the provider, and ultimately in separation and hatred by the recipient who feels denied of real happiness and blames it on the provider. Omnibenevolence is an evil itself. Demanding omnibenevolence from a “good” deity is irrational.

    4. Even in the face of the evil of omnibenevolence, Atheists claim that a moral deity would not allow any consequences for bad decisions. This has been called the “perfectly protected playground”, where the deity cushions all falls and no one ever learns how not to fall in the first place.

The argument from evil ties-in perfectly with humanism, which requires happiness as the ultimate good. Not the happiness of the individual, mind you, but the generalized happiness of the bulk of mankind. In fact, individual happiness is to be sacrificed for that of overall mankind. It is this sacrifice, it is claimed paradoxically, that provides happiness to the individual. Humanism has resulted in the slaughter of hundreds of millions of humans, all for the good of mankind. Humanism is one of the worst evils visited upon this planet; it is directly connected to Atheism, and is justified by the argument from evil.

The argument from evil, is itself, evil. It is illogical, and it is false

There appear to be two main routes to reach a state of Christian induced stupor. The most common approach among practicing adherents is to get ‘em while they’re young and impressionable. The traditions of blind acceptance are transferred from one generation to the next. Any questioning of the faith from their young charges is met with admonishment, reprimand, physical and mental stress, and, if all else fails, banishment. Ever hear the motto “Spare the rod, spoil the child”? The child is fit into the mold of belief. Really, what other choice is there for the impressionable mind? Compliance is strictly mandatory.

The other route involves salvation through ignorance. People (adults, usually) who have lost the ability to steer their own ships due to addictions issues. Think AA and other 12 step programs here. The Christians use the external agent of god to supplant the perceived need of whatever noxious agent the addict feels they need. A god becomes absolutely necessary in order to maintain sobriety. These folks often consider themselves “Born Again”.

Both routes require brainwashing. Both are quite effective at perpetuating the myth of JC.

Adding to #180, the same individual who told that their church had a policy of “get them while they are young” also attended a class on bible study and evangelizing.

What they said was that they were to spread the word but that they should focus on people who were likely to be more receptive. Top of the list? People suffering from emotional stress or who were otherwise depressed or in need of help. These people, they were told, would be the most impressionable and receptive to the word.

In other words, find people who are otherwise not thinking clearly, desperate, at their wit’s end and tell them how these things were happening because they had rejected god, but it could all be better if only they believed and joined the church.

At that point they should make that person’s identify known so that others can help make sure that the new convert was “welcomed”, followed through, and wasn’t allowed to backslide.

    In other words, brainwashing.

UGH AA. Great aim (sobriety), shame about the indoctrination.

Whilst it is difficult to measure these things, AA has never actually been shown to be more effective than other methods. Another complication is that QQ couches their success in a variation of the No True Scotsman as they tie it to “rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path” effectively discarding dropouts and failures and placing failure on the participant, not the method.

In terms of the “spiritual” I’ve found it desperately sad to see how many go through that program and become convinced that they cannot function without the help of some “higher power” which is just a cover word for AA’s evangelical roots.

Members give away their own power and become convinced that it was something other than their own damn hard work and determination that got them clean and sober.

It’s disappointing that we as a society allow people to be manipulated in such a manner.

Anonymous, your claim of brain washing is crap.

Atheists want to subject the USA to a campaign of Atheist bumper-sticker wisdom extolling how virtuous Atheism and Atheists are. The latest attack was to have planes towing banners fly over ball games and Fourth of July celebrations, with messages claiming that “Atheism is Patriotic” and proclaiming a “God-LESS America”.

    According to American Atheists,
“The very fact that we stand up to defend the constitutional separation of church and state, fight for the civil rights of all non-theists, and work to ensure true freedom of religion is one of the most patriotic things anyone can do! By defending against theocracy, we are acting patriotic and defending the founding document of this country. What better day to emphasize this than on the birthday of our great country?

“This campaign is not about pushing the “atheist agenda” or shoving our views down people’s throats. This is about advertising and raising the tide for all atheists across the United States. This is about getting Americans to recognize the role atheists play in this country and our dedication to its constitution. This is about generating public discussion about atheism, religion and the role of religion in politics and our national identity. This is an opportunity for public discourse about the very issues that are important not only to us, but to every American (whether they realize it or not)…

The problem is that most Atheists tend to the Left far enough that religious freedom means freedom from religion, meaning in every public venue there will be no absolutes. As for patriotism, it is easier to find one-worlders than border defenders amongst the Atheist community. The definition of patriotism given by the American Atheists, above, is a niche too narrow to measure when taken in the overall scheme of requirements for patriotism. It is a definition of defining and expanding a cult, using an imagined interpretation of the Constitution.

Atheists seem to think that the rest of the world doesn’t actually know what freedom from absolutes means when it is taken into the warp and woof of society. Atheism comes without principles attached to it, and is therefore unprincipled. Certainly some Atheists co-op the Judeo-Christian principles that permeated the first two centuries of American history. But under their own system of absence of moral principles, they are free to deviate in whichever direction they choose, whenever they choose to do so. And they have been busily deviating from moral principles for the last half century as they change laws to allow perversions to become mainstreamed, under the rubric of “civil rights” and “equality”, as if every actor is to be guaranteed those things regardless of his actions, no matter how odious. Extending protection to bad actors is not patriotic, it is odious itself.

What simplistic Atheist thinking misses here is that a God-LESS America is a fearsome concept if one takes it seriously. Being free of absolutes is not a comforting thought for those who can and have seen the absolutes-free reign of Atheist governments in the 20th Century. There is nothing new in history, only new players giving new names to the same old stuff. With the Republic on its last legs and staggering toward the abyss, all we need is principle-free Atheists taking charge, if they haven’t already. And I think maybe they have.

In terms of muddled thinking, what would the Atheist reaction have been if planes flying over public gatherings proclaimed “Jesus Saves”, or “Allahu Akbar”? By violating the very premise of their argument, they demonstrate their non-linear, floating-base thinking.

Once again, the Astrophysicist and the sock brigade have run away and refused to debate honestly and with integrity, and have steadfastly refused to answer or even acknowledge any of the multitude of questions that have been presented them about their faith. Why? Because they know full well that to do so will expose the depth of their insanity and their brainwashing will simply not allow them to confront this, so they bury their heads in the sand and squawk meaningless nonsense about Buddhists, Realeans, and the amorality of atheists.

Let’s look at the logic of the atheist mentality here.

1.The verse says the unbeliever will be punished

2.The atheist decides this is torture (not in the text)

3.The atheist has decided they are “good”.

4.The atheists decides not to believe

5.The atheist will face the punishment for sin.

    Here is the parallel.

1.The gun owner says don’t break in my house or I will shoot you

2.The atheist decides not to believe what has been warned.

3.The atheist decides they are “good” and deserve the owner’s property

    4.The atheists breaks in anyhow

5.The atheist faces the punishment and is shot.

The evangelist is actually the caring one for warning against a punishment he/she believes is valid. This is the logical thing to do.

It’s astonishing to see the naivety with which Curmudgeon, Martin, A, the 40Yahole and others proudly portray the results of their religious indoctrination. It seems that they are blissfully unaware as to how brainwashed they really are. It’s almost cute.

As a believer, Curmudgeon et al, have been indoctrinated with the mantra that believing nonsense is a good thing. In fact, the more ridiculous the things that they believe, the more they pat themselves on the back. And, face it, it’s hard to find something more ridiculous that the belief that your invisible best friend is a god who created the universe, then sacrificed himself to himself to atone to himself, and that all of mankind is eternally grateful for this nonsensical act.

What they are showing here is that during the years of brainwashing they’ve learned not to think for themselves and not to question their indoctrination. However, faced with having to actually provide answers and to back them up with logic and facts, the Christian ends up in the predicament Martin was in recently. Remember, he said he wouldn’t answer our questions because we’d laugh at [the inadequacies of] his answers.

Now, like all good cults the member is trained with how to deal with the cognitive dissonance associated with such events. Typically it involves a way out that avoids thinking about the problem.

In this case we see how easily Curmudgeon reverts to true Christian form and shows typical Christian xenophobia. Not only that, be he does what Christians have long been known for during the ages, he launches a preemptive attacks on his perceived enemy. Christianity, in the end, is a death cult and a religion of hate. Sometimes I find it hard to consider which religion is the most hateful – Islam or Christianity? It’s a tough call.

Finally, as a reminder, here’s the questions for the theists.

Why would an all loving being “God” make people live an eternity of pain and suffering simply because they didn’t want to believe in him?

Now tell us how you came to choose YOUR flavor of Christianity over all the others?

Do you agree with messy that hell is NOT eternal?

Do you agree with him that atheists can go to heaven as long as they are good?

Do you think women should be ordained into the priesthood?

Is using birth control a sin?

Does Jesus cry when you masturbate?

Is divorce ok with god, or forbidden?

Why there are so many variants of Christianity? …
Are those other christians brainwashed into joining a church/paying a tithe ?

Is it ok to go to a doctor when you are sick, or should you have faith that Jesus will make you better?

Is it ok to be gay?

Why are there 41,000 different denominations of the supposedly one true religion

Also, especially for Martin. Provide formal logical proof for the existence of your god. Explain, using a logical proof, why you worship the god that you do.

TRANSLATION: I am a dumb fuck that doesn’t understand any religion other than my own particular flavour of christianity. If the other religion is non-theistic or poly-theistic it is beyond my comprehension and therefore must be invalid. I chant my mantra “They’re wrong, I am right, you are an atheist” whenever something confusing or complex interferes with my invisible man story. It helps.

I will note that Raelians (and Scientologists, by the way) have a whole lot more in common with christianity than with atheism. Let’s see:
    1. All ascribe to some invisible “out there” entity as creator of mankind – All have human origin myths.
    2. They are religions (Relax “a”, atheism is simply a rejection of a belief in a god, nothing more)
    3. They have a hierarchy (bishop priest etc) and profit, errrr ….I mean Prophet, of course.
    4. All use brainwashing to keep adherents in line
    5. Use of baptism
    6. Belief in Jesus
    7. Religious symbols to denote the faith.

    Mousey!

Tell you what. You answer my questions I have asked numerous times and I will chose 3 of you questions. How is that? Are you willing to take the risk?

I suspect Anonymous would be perfectly willing if he thought you’d actually honour your claim in an honest way.

sorry, but you proved yourself untrustworthy with the age of the earth question and now you must go first.

Cause you’ve never proven yourself untrustworthy at all have you? Sheesh.

Start with how did DNA evolve?

Firstly I have to ask why it is that you are asking us? As far as I’m aware none of the atheists on this blog are molecular biologists/biochemists engaged in the study of how DNA came to be. However, people who are molecular biologists/biochemists engaged in the study of how DNA came to be have many evolutionary hypotheses as to how it may have done so. Maybe you could try Googling and read what they have to say on the matter. You could start here or here.

Use the scientific method. It did evolve, right?

From what I’ve read from people using the scientific method to actually study the phenomenon I’d say that yes, yes it did.

    And evolution is fact, yes?

Evolution as a biological process – changes in allele frequency in populations over time – is indeed a fact.

Of course evolution has no bearing on the existence of the Christian God. All it does is show that the creation story in Genesis is just that, a story. Many Christians have no problem integrating evolution into their theistic worldviews. It’s only the more fundamentalist literalist believers that are forced to deny evolution despite the enormous amount of evidence that supports the theory.

And, as Alex keeps pointing out, even if the process of evolution was not a fact and the theory of evolution wasn’t the best explanation for current biodiversity this does nothing to support the claim that the Christian God exists.

How did you chose your flavor of atheism?

Through the only rational process humanity has available to it, the use of reason.

    Why not Jain?

Because Jainism holds some irrational, non-evidence based beliefs such as the existence of Nirvana (Heaven), Naraka (Hell), eternal souls, life after death and reincarnation.

Then, provide some evidence for macro evolution which we can test with the scientific method.

Why don’t you just wander on over to TalkOrigins and go through their 29+ Evidences for Macroevolution.

Again with evolution. It’s irrelevant, a diversion. Surely God’s existence doesn’t rest on the truth/falsity of evolution? What a pathetic God that would be.

Lets see if you are honest or are concerned more with a gotcha.

Now lets see if you are honest – pick your 3 questions from Anonymous and answer them.

I suspect however, that A will, instead, choose to pick at both Fluttershy’s and my answers as a means of diverting the conversation away from him honouring his claim and to continue his desperate run from the burden of proof that he refuses to acknowledge he has.

No, once again you completely fail to understand what an “atheist” is. I’m an atheist, and I understand that to “evolve” is nothing more than “to change over time”. So DNA most certainly evolves… we can observe this process in bacteria. But that has absolutely nothing to do with being atheist, any more than I could say that because you are a creationist and a theist, therefore “theists do not believe in evolution.” which would also be an example of you fallacious reasoning.

You keep asking for “evidence” of macro evolution. You will find none because there is no such thing. The word is “speciation” and there is ample evidence of it, all you need do is look if it is important to you. But it has nothing to do with the topic at hand… religious brainwashing. Except, perhaps to demonstrate how religious brainwashing works. In that case, thank you for making the case so abundantly clear.

Quite interesting, isn’t it? Goddidit is the answer if evolution is true to him or not. It does NOT matter what you, me, three separate people, or even a few thousand people think. ToE is backed by science…It’s been completely accepted by most theists -deal with it bitch.

The important feature of the defective mental abilities that “a” exquisitely displays is to not only attribute “goddidit” to issues beyond his comprehension, but to also spin everything (good or bad) as having occurred due to the wisdom of gauwd.

2 Classic theist examples of gauwds infinite compassion and wisdom:
My mom and dad were murdered. RESPONSE: They’re with gauwd in a better place now. Ain’t gauwd great?
My mom and dad killed someone trying to kill them. RESPONSE: Ain’t gauwd great, he protected them from harm.

No matter the situation the standard response is one of: “goddidit” when they don’t understand or “Ain’t gauwd great” when life happens. But, remember, IT’S NOT BRAINWASHING ;-)

so i wait until the next evening and i stand just outside of their view and watch them kill each other.

they are killing each other because they are confused and afraid. they dont know where i am and are trying to figure out how to bring me back to them. and their reaction is violent towards each other.

to anyone reading this (lets call this scenario a)

Interesting question… I think I could make a case that “bringing them home and putting them in your basement” was actually the immoral act.
Of course, “exploring the nature of our understanding of good and evil” is meaningless to the theists here, because they will tell you that they have “an absolute moral code” handed down by the creator that is not subject to interpretation, being absolute. I may be wrong, but I believe the bible… the source of this “absolute morality” gives man absolute dominion over the earth and all its creatures. If that is the case, then I guess that the biblical god would have no trouble with you standing by and watching them kill each other… I mean after all, that’s what he does with us, so it must be the right thing to do, Biblically speaking, no?

Check your zipper messy, your insanity is showing again… hahaha.

I suspect however, that A will, instead, choose to pick at both Fluttershy’s and my answers as a means of diverting the conversation away from him honouring his claim and to continue his desperate run from the burden of proof that he refuses to acknowledge he has.

Well, he’s avoided my post altogether but has done nothing but pick at Fluttershy, Anonymous and DPK’s responses without ever coming close to honouring his promise to answer 3 of Anonymous’ questions.

I could claim to be a prophet but his dodging and running away were always so predictable that I’d never have gotten decent odds from any bookie.

And while Hor keeps demanding that people answer his diversionary questions, it must be sad to have a reputation of being so deceitful that no-one is surprised by his lies and broken promises.

292.Fluttershy, the humans of that time period were hateful, cruel, and selfish. They deserved to be punished.

GOD punished the bad people and saved the good people(Noah and his family).

299.DPK, GOD wants to teach people right from wrong, so he planned for some people to do good things and some people to do bad things. GOD wants us to be held accountable for our actions so that we will learn not to do bad things.

291.michael, GOD gave us the laws and rules that we need in order to have peaceful lives. GOD wants us to learn to follow these laws and rules so that we will eventually live entirely in peace.

GOD has never abandoned us. GOD is always with us, and he reveilles h self to us every day by giving us life, by giving us friends, by giving us family, by giving us unconditional love, and by giving us paridice in heaven.

If you could summarize the entire old testement it would be like the following list.

    1. GOD gives humans freedom and land.

    2. Humans abandon GOD.

    3. Humans are freed by GOD.

    4. GOD gives humans power and land.

    5. Humans break GOD’s laws and forget GOD.

    6. Humans are put back into bondage

    7. Those steps keep repeating themselfs.

Messenger – Great to see you re still fighting the fight. :)

Here’s the thing that I have learned since the last time I wrote anything to you all..

If you don’t believe – then don’t believe!!! WTF?!!! Why argue about it? DUR! Doesn’t it seem strange to you all you disbelievers that you are all so passionate about someone you have never seen?? Why are you spending so much time and energy trying to dissolve something that you believe doesn’t exist??? It’s kinda like trying to argue about fairies??? maybe you’ll get more luck there??? lol

I’m guessing some of you just are so bored out of your own minds that this is what you do for KICKS! yeah?? Maybe….. or maybe not …. who am I to judge?

Here’s the thing y’all – If you have seen god – you know god exists 100% -if you haven’t seen god – yet you believe in him then one day you will, providing you have a pure heart – If not – then meh!! you most likely won’t see him… SIMPLE!

Ok, I’ll make a ready BOLD statement here… and I know you are all going to go all crazy punks on this – but I’ll say it anyway….

When the bible says “Fear the Lord” I know n my heart – he means “Feel the Lord”

I am a firm believer if you haven’t guessed so already… those who know the lord can verify this and these words.

If you are up for challenge… I’m in. So long as you have intelligent questions…
