It is time to end tax-exempt status for churches

It is time to end tax-exempt status for churches. They collect billions in revenue every year. The organizations that make the most money – the “Megachurches” – are big business. There is no reason why they should be tax-exempt.

Churches try to argue that they act like “charities”, but they are highly inefficient in the charity role. Compared to a well-run secular charity, a Megachurch has immense overhead in terms of building upkeep, debt, salaries, etc. Therefore, on a percentage basis, very little of a Megachurch’s money actually goes toward charitable activities.

In addition to being highly inefficient, churches are now openly violating one key condition of their tax exempt status. It is illegal for tax-exempt churches to make political endorsements. Yet churches plan to openly defy this law:

Ban on Political Endorsements by Pastors Targeted

Stanley said three dozen church leaders from more than 20 states have agreed to deliver a political sermon, naming political names.

“The sermon will be an evaluation of conditions for office in light of scripture and doctrine. They will make a specific recommendation from the pulpit about how the congregation would vote,” he said.

“They could oppose a candidate. They could oppose both candidates. They could endorse a candidate. They could focus on a federal, state or local election.”

Let churches pay taxes like any other business. Then they are free to endorse candidates.

On a side note, this sentence is particularly humorous in light of Sarah Palin’s Candidacy: “The sermon will be an evaluation of conditions for office in light of scripture and doctrine. They will make a specific recommendation from the pulpit about how the congregation would vote.”

As mentioned in a previous post, here are scriptural dictates in the Bible that apply to Sarah Palin:

Ephesians 5:22:

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord

Colossians 3:18:

Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.

Titus 2:3-5:

Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.

1 Peter 3:1-7:

Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.

Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.

1 Timothy 2:9-15::

I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.

A church that follows “God’s Word” can’t endorse a female candidate without defying “God’s Will” in the Bible.
