Christians, like any group of people, spread out across a spectrum. At one end of the spectrum there are Fundamentalist Christians and Evangelical Christians. In the middle there are Devout Christians and Practicing Christians. At the other end there are Christmas Christians and Casual Christians.
The problem is that the Fundamentalist Christians and Evangelical Christians truly are insane. There is no doubt about this – their delusion is insanity, and the insanity manifests itself in myriad ways, as we will see in a moment.
The further problem is that the Christmas Christians and Casual Christians give Christianity an overwhelming mass in our society, and therefore provide harborage for the insanity.
The insanity is vividly illustrated in this article:
From that article, here is a quote by James Dobson, a prominent Evangelical leader:
The spanking should be of sufficient magnitude to cause the child to cry genuinely. After the emotional ventilation, the child will often want to crumple to the breast of his parent, and he should be welcomed with open, warm, loving arms.
Beating a person – any person – is torture. It is wrong. Beating a defenseless child is insanity. In most sane places, body blows like this would be seen and charged as assault. But Fundamentalist Christians and Evangelical Christians are insane, and they see beating their children as something good that is commanded by their imaginary God. And unfortunately, Christians are a majority in America so their insane child abuse goes unchallenged.
Are you a casual Christian? Those of us who are sane and rational beg you – abandon the insanity. The people who follow this imaginary God are insane, and in many cases they are violent and repulsive, as demonstrated above. Please take the time to read things like Whywontgodhealamputees.com and come to your senses. Give up this childish delusion and become a rational, thinking adult. Run away from the insanity so that these people lose the safe harbor you give them.
Rationals Thomas on 26 Feb 2010
After dealing with wingnut Christian Republicans all the time, Obama will be relieved to talk with rational people today:
Representatives of several leading Atheist, Freethought, and Humanist organizations will gather in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, next door to the White House, at 11:00 AM ET, for the briefing.
Dr. Ed Buckner, President of American Atheists, said “We are delighted that we will get the chance to speak to and to hear from the Obama administration at the briefing with the Secular Coalition for America tomorrow. We will not be seeking support for Atheism from the federal administration, because we know they must be neutral and because we are confident that our conclusions can compete and win in the marketplace of ideas, unaided by government. We seek an end to special rights for religious ideas and beliefs–in all regulations, laws, procedures, and pronouncements. The privileging of religiosity violates the First Amendment and good sense.”
A great point:
As the nation, states, and communities struggle during trying economic times, revoking the tax-exempt status for religious organizations must be considered and is long overdue. This is especially true when groups like Mormons, Catholics, and evangelical Christians contribute to political campaigns that promote their hateful religious agendas, or worse yet, when they preach political issues from the pulpit.
Note that the NFL also has tax exempt status. The NFL! Strip that too:
As the following article demonstrates, there are delusional people who believe the earth is flat:
And the amazing thing is that they sound EXACTLY like those delusional people who follow religion. Where have you heard this logic before:
“I haven’t taken this position just to be difficult. To look around, the world does appear to be flat, so I think it is incumbent on others to prove decisively that it isn’t. And I don’t think that burden of proof has been met yet.”
If we substitute two words, we have religious babble:
“I haven’t taken this position just to be difficult. To look around,
the worldlife does appear to be flatdesigned, so I think it is incumbent on others to prove decisively that it isn’t. And I don’t think that burden of proof has been met yet.”
The problem is that, in the same way there is a gigantic, insurmountable amount of evidence showing that the planet is a sphere, there is a gigantic, insurmountable amount of evidence showing that life has evolved. The only way to believe in intelligent design, or a flat earth, is to ignore and deny all of the evidence.
Understand the delusion:

A recent study lays out the evidence for a link between Christianity and racism:
Further, Wood said, the more devout the religionist, the more extreme the racism.
The opposite is also true; Wood and her co-authors found that the less religious the person, the less racial prejudice is manifested.
One possible surprise? We are all familiar with the stereotype of the fundamentalist Christian ranting against all sorts of people, and assume that she is more likely to harbor racist attitudes than the friendly, rational-seeming Episcopalian next door. Not so.
While fundamentalists were more outspoken with their bigotries, Wood, et al found that mainstream Christians held the same prejudices, while paying lip service to racial tolerance.

…is on display again:
Specifically he said:
“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” said Marshall, a Republican.
“In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest.”
So the Christian god punishes people by torturing their children with deformities. Yes, that seems like someone worthy of worship. What a disgusting god.
Christians, why would you worship this disgusting thing?

Any normal person who reads the creation story has to wonder about Eve. If you read the Bible’s description of Eve, it appears that the omnipotent, all-knowing creator of the universe creates Eve as an afterthought, as described here:
After reading that, any normal person knows that the Bible is a book of mythology, and is therefore both meaningless and useless. It is a ridiculous story.
If you are a Christian, it would be interesting to hear how you account for God’s lapse. What happened? Why do you believe in any of this?
…they would look like this:
As shown in the article, the current design has a million flaws – exactly what you would expect from a random process.
…according to this Vicar:
In a leaflet issued to parishoners, the Rev Angus MacLeay used passages in the Bible to justify women playing a submissive role in local church life. He urged women to “submit to their husbands in everything”.
This is of course exactly what the Bible teaches.
The article notes, “One disenchanted female parishioner said she was “disgusted” by the sermon.” As well she should be. But she should also be completely disgusted by the Bible, and therefore by God, and she should abandon it all and become rational.
Why haven’t all women abandoned Christianity? Why can women not read the Bible, see what it plainly says and then understand it is all repulsive idiocy? It is exactly the same in Islam. Why don’t women abandon such absurd religions? Are they blind?

Have you ever talked to an evangelical Christian, a devout Muslim or a devoted New Age follower and thought, “this person must have brain damage?” Perhaps they do:
Religious thinking has been tied to various brain regions before, but a new study moves things a big step forward. By measuring indicators of religiosity in brain-cancer patients before and after surgery to remove their tumors, a team of researchers in Italy has found that damage to a specific region of the brain (the posterior parietal cortex) can increase a person’s feelings of “self-transcendence,” or the feeling of being connected to others and to the universe.
Researchers report in a new study today that they have found regions of the brain that seem to impact a person’s level of spirituality.
All the gooey emotionalism, the constant talk about the blood of Jesus Christ, the creepy desire to convert others, and the incessant reading of the Bible without ever seeing its huge, gaping flaws – maybe it is all related to brain damage as well.
Admit it – This sermon sounds totally insane to any normal person:
Brain damage would be a logical explanation.
A forthright description of psychics and psychic believers that should apply to all religious leaders and practitioners as well
Charlie Brooker pulls no punches when it comes to psychics and their followers:
I think every psychic and medium in this country belongs in prison. Even the ones demented enough to believe in what they’re doing. In fact, especially them. Give them windowless cells and make them crap in buckets. They can spend the rest of their days sewing mailbags in the dark.
The audiences that psychics prey on are equally infuriating, albeit less deserving of contempt. They’re just disappointing, like a friend who’s let you down. Often, they’re simply grieving and desperate.
I mean, if you want to believe in psychics, fine. You’re a dangerous idiot and I wouldn’t trust you to operate a spoon without putting an eye out … but fine. Your choice. Delude yourself silly. Your world is probably more fun than the real one. There’s no death, just an afterlife filled with magic spirits who like to communicate with eerie, ugly, otherwise-unemployable bottom-of-the-barrel “showmen” back on Earth.
But don’t accuse anyone with the temerity to question your sad supernatural fantasies of having a “closed mind” or being “blind to possibilities”. A closed mind asks no questions, unthinkingly accepting that which it wants to believe. The blindness is all yours.
The obvious thing about psychics is that they are lying, and provably so. The problem with their followers is that they are so gullible that they refuse to acknowledge the lying.
And so it is with all religious leaders and their followers. They are cut from the same cloth.
How does someone who is a Christian make the transition to rationality? By reading and thinking clearly. People who can think become rational.
Here is a person in the middle of the transition asking very common questions:
Here is a person who has gone through the process but is not yet able to tell anyone:
Here is a couple who have made the transition and are able to tell the world:

The belief that the earth is 6,000 years old, just like the Bible says, is rife amongst Christians. Perhaps half of the adults in the United States believe this nonsense. Here is a typical example of the belief:
The Bible says the world is about six thousand years old. But it seems like everything we learn from science tells us the world is billions of years old and the dinosaurs lived hundreds of millions of years ago.
Who is telling the truth? God or scientists?
What are the facts? Is a 6,000 year age for the earth based on different facts than a billion year age for the earth?
The author then introduces three “facts” demonstrating a 6,000 year old earth. The problem is that they are not facts at all. For example, the first “fact” is the “fossilized hat”. But anyone with 5 minutes of research can debunk it. Here is an article from the LA Times:
And a much simpler effort:
In other words, on one side you have hundreds of thousands of highly trained scientists using the latest tools and techniques to understand the universe. All of their knowledge and data fits together in the interlocking world of science. On the other side you have people who say anything they like, with no evidence, to fit whatever beliefs they choose to make up in their heads. How nonsensical can it get? Here is a quote from the LA Times:
Ham encourages people to further their research with the dozens of books and DVDs sold by his ministry. They give answers to every question a critic might ask: How did Noah fit dinosaurs on the ark? He took babies. Why didn’t a tyrannosaur eat Eve? All creatures were vegetarians until Adam’s sin brought death into the world. How can we have modern breeds of dog like the poodle if God finished his work 6,000 years ago? He created a dog “kind” — a master blueprint — and let evolution take over from there.
If a “god” created humans, you have to wonder how humans can be so idiotic.

The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out. Why should I support an organisation that has a limited view of my beloved brother?
All she has to do is read the Bible and she would be a rational person.
Catholicism’s hatred of gays comes straight out of the Bible. All Christian religions are derived from the Bible. Simply by reading the Bible, she will realize that the “god” of Christianity hates her beloved brother. As soon as she realizes the idiocy of a “god of love” who hates, she would be able to abandon Episcopalianism and become rational.
This is true of all Christians. If they would simply read the Bible and understand its utter stupidity, they would become rational. The following video explains the situation:

There is an excellent thread in the forums on a recent poll of Republicans:
QUESTION: Should public school students be taught that the book of Genesis in the Bible explains how God created the world? YES 77%; NO 15%; NOT SURE 8%.
QUESTION: Do you believe that the only way for an individual to go to heaven is though Jesus Christ, or can one make it to heaven through another faith? CHRIST 67%; OTHER 15%; NOT SURE 18%.
Now imagine that these theocrats win the Presidential election. What happens next?
