With religion (as well as many other things) there is an opportunity to gain power/influence over others. It's the power that corrupts. Many have used religion to do good.

Arguing with religious people who quote the Bible/Qu'ran/Torah/etc. to make their point is not a constructive use of anyone's time.

It is my personal belief that anyone who believes in a god or practices religion is lazy and mentally inferior. Not in terms of intellect but in terms of will. It is just what I believe and what I have observed in 50 years of living. I see it as a crutch, like using drugs or alcohol to cope with the unpleasantries of life. I don't say these things to insult.

The best example of words to live by I have seen is Desiderata by Max Ehrmann.

10.Mitch- sorry but crossing the line, some christians belive in abortion i dont but please listen

Because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die. -- 2 Samuel 12:14

personally it was the paernts fualt, and the kids did nothing wrong BUT this is NOT abortion- abortion is of their own free will

Abortion is a sin against ourselves, "in those things whereof ye are now ashamed... for the end of those things is death" (Romans 6:21).

"And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do... and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child" (2Kings 8:12).

Basically HE hates abortion and says its evil that does it and US

"The answer is No. Secularism does not make people more ethical. As we become more secular our morality plummets."

Except that there's no evidence to support your conclusion.

If anything, religion gives people a greater opportunity for immoral behavior. It gives them both excuse and license. One need look no further than the Catholic priest child-molestation scandals. And the list goes on.

As evidenced by??????
Perhaps the overwhelmingly religious populations of US prisons?

Biff.. you're full of crap. What about "thou shalt not bear false witness?" doesn't that apply to you? You have no compunction about telling outright lies, or are you actually so deluded you don't realize they are lies? Sad.

@ Mitch:

Regarding death penalty:
Here is a diagram of countries that have death penalty.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Death_Penalty_World_Map.svg
Basically you find death penalty in Islamic countries and dictatorships - and the US. Makes you wonder what type of ethical values you need to support death penalty, doesn't it? In any case, death penalty is a typical non-Western world thing and pretty uncommon in countries with a Christian heritage. I am glad that God is giving so much guidance to the US. (Irony!)

"I did laugh since it sounds like the musings of a 7 year old. Let us examine if this is true. Lenin was a very intelligent man as was Hitler. I could list hundreds and hundreds of politicians in DC over the last century who were very intelligent but also very unethical."

"I did laugh" because you demonstrated how faulty your thinking is. That someone is both "intelligent" and "very unethical" is not evidence that morality does not "spring forth from the intellect." The state of being "very unethical" is a degree of morality. "Badness" also "springs from the human intellect."

You are such an ignorant ass. While attempting to refute that "morality spring[s] forth from the intellect," you actually supported that assertion that morality, both good and bad, "springs from the human intellect."

Please tell us - where does morality originate?
