You probably mean “skate” across the border. “Skirt” used as a verb means to go around something without actually going through the heard of it. That’s the exact opposite of what illegal immigrants do.

I taught a class for a few months that had a bunch of Mexican immigrants in it, and ironically, though they struggled with English, most of them took more pride in getting things right than the supposedly American-born religious zealots that post here.

Actually, the employment of illegal aliens helps the US economy immensely, because it allows unscrupulous corporations essentially employ slave labor and cut payroll costs. In much the same way that sending 8 year old children into a coal mine to work 18-hour days. Welfare states only work as long as at least more than 50% of the population is working and if the nation remains relatively small. Which is why nations in the EU are beginning to fail and the people are kicking out the progressive liberals from office. I am encouraged you are speaking of Norway as a model though- a secular Social Democratic country. By the way, I have spent time there both in the rural farming areas as well as Oslo. These are not church going folk. While most of the folk I interacted with had graduate degrees, and were fairly affluent, they uniformly were incrdulous that there were extreme religious beliefs, biblical literalism and personal salvation for example, in the United States. It was even more incredible that Americans would elect people who believed such things.

1. Natural resources? What are we not exploiting here? And please do not say something idiotic about the offshore ban. They have much tighter restrictions than the US. In fact, had Norwegian drilling protocols been used in the Gulf of Mexico, the BP debacle would not have happened. The North Slope of Alaska? It is not economical. No one is clamoring to drill up there aside from jingoistic morons like Palin. By the way, Norway is the 7th largest exporter of petroleum, and 10th largest producer.

2. Small Population? Think birth control and abortions for teenage girls. All paid for by the government, even before the oil boom. Few Catholics and no fundamentalist Christians. Mind you, this is and has been one of the most socially liberal countries in Europe for decades.

3. Tight Borders? Have you looked at a map? They have absolutely porous borders- most of it is coastline, and then unmarked and unguarded frontier with Sweden, and a bit of Finland. Of course, there are not too many Inuits making a mad dash across the Norwegian Sea to hunt caribou. Is this what you mean?

Did you also forget that this is totally a welfare state? Also, you should check out the tax system. Their tax system is simple without loopholes. Corporations pay 28%. If you are in oil, you pay an additional 50% on top of the 28%. Why don’t we do that here? The main reason is simpleton “issue voters” who are manipulated by Republicans as they have turned the United States into the largest kleptocracy in the World; more subtle than the Russians, but even more effective.

Thanks for the REAL facts about Norway. The things that make them so successful would be easy to implement here. Problem is we must be tolerant therfore we cannot have tight boarders and we can not build nuclear power plants or drill for oil. We can expand give-aways and social programs to keep the nation down.

Therefore to make themselves feel better, some must force reasoning for atheism as Norway’s road to success. How ridiculous.
