4 Lou
„Why? Why would God design man....“

.. at all?

That is the question I am trying to find answer for some time.
Why would god need us?

Well, Lou, I didn't say what God should have designed. He could design anything that pleased him. Evidently not "perfect" though I have heard many a Believer assert that our bodies are perfect, but that certainly does not come from sacred scripture.

The point is that we are the way we evolved, or as we were designed if you will. If God is unhappy with the result is it our fault? How can we assume blame for a Fall from original perfection if original perfection never existed? I maintain that we do nothing wrong,... we act the way we were designed. Now this is not to say we act perfectly... we act as imperfectly as we were designed. And yes, we should all strive to do better, be better people.

So George, you believe God should have designed a Superman? Why? Why would God design man to be what you consider "flawless" when he has no intent of allowing you to live over a century? So man can do more damage, kill more people and commit more horrific crimes?

Last, I have never seen or read where God claimed that man was a perfect being. Quite the contrary. However if you are not in awe of the incredible complexity and functionality of the human body you must be of the uneducated sort.

What idiot would designed an animal that has to push its offspring out a rigid bony canal? What with our large heads (supposedly the better to think with) we barely manage to negotiate that tight space. Think of the millions of women and babies that have died only because the birth passage was too small.

The inguinal canal is a shoddy piece of work. Evidently testicles cannot tolerate a bit of heat so they descend to the scrotum, leaving behind a weakness that allows hernias to develop. Why not make the testicles just a wee bit heat tolerant and leave 'em in the body?

Only one set of coronary arteries, when we have paired everything else! Come on!

Why would an Intelligent Designer make a brain that dies after only 4 minutes of no blood flow? Why not just have it shut down, and then re-awaken when blood gets flowing again?

A Benevolent Deity would have realized that we would adopt as a numeric system the number of fingers we have on two hands (that's where we got the decimal system, you know), and if he were a mathematician, he'd have given us 12 fingers -- so we'd use a 12 based number system. It is ever so much more versatile than the decimal system.

We live on a planet the surface of which is 75% covered with water. Why not a set of gills in lieu of, say, the appendix?

The list goes on and on... The Scientific American article barely scratches the surface.
